Anaphylaxis
What are the symptoms of an allergic reaction? What is anaphylaxis?
Classic allergic reactions usually include a red, itchy rash called hives that occurs within minutes of ingesting foods containing cow’s milk. Hives can progress to or occur as part of a more serious allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that may include any of the following symptoms: wheezing or other breathing problems, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach cramps, face, mouth, or throat swelling, or signs of shock, including low blood pressure, dizziness, and passing out.
Is anaphylaxis an emergency?
Yes. If you or your child is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction you should seek immediate medical attention (call 911) and administer epinephrine with an auto-injector (Epipen or Twinject). Severe anaphylaxis may require treatment with epinephrine, intravenous fluids, antihistamines, and steroids in an emergency medical facility.
What should I do if I have a child with a history of anaphylaxis?
Children with food allergies should have an emergency care plan at home and at school. They should also have an epinephrine injector readily available to be administered by a trained adult.
What are some common foods that can cause anaphylaxis?
Shellfish, peanuts and tree nuts are the foods responsible for most cases of anaphylaxis. Anaphylactic reactions to other foods implicated in food allergy including milk, egg, wheat, soy, and fish are possible, but less common.
