Handling Dander During Shedding Season

AllergiesAllergyAsthma

The summer heat means loads of shedding from your furry friends. If you’re dealing with pet allergies, it can be a bit of a nightmare. But don’t worry, we’ve got some tips to help you handle dander and keep your home as comfortable as possible this summer. Here are a few FAQs to guide you through this shedding season.

Q: What is dander, and why does it increase during shedding season?

A: Dander consists of tiny, even microscopic, flecks of skin shed by cats, dogs, rodents, birds and other animals with fur or feathers. During shedding season, pets lose more fur, and with it, more dander. This can trigger allergies and make it harder to keep your home allergen-free.

Q: How often should I groom my pet to reduce dander?

A: Regular grooming is key. Aim to brush your pet at least once a day during their shedding season. This helps remove loose fur and dander before it ends up all over your home. Use grooming tools designed to handle shedding, like de-shedding brushes, to get the best results. We recommend you wear a mask when performing this chore, to prevent/limit your exposure to the dander as it may trigger your pet allergies.

Q: Can bathing my pet help with dander?

A: Yes, bathing your pet can significantly reduce dander. Bathe your pet every 1-2 weeks with a hypoallergenic pet shampoo. This helps remove loose fur, dander and other allergens from their coat. Don’t forget to dry them thoroughly!

Q: What are some ways to keep my home dander-free?

A: Keeping your home clean is crucial. Vacuum regularly using a vacuum with a HEPA filter to trap dander particles. Dust surfaces with a damp cloth to prevent spreading dander into the air. Wash pet bedding and your own bedding frequently in hot water to eliminate dander buildup.

Q: Are there any air quality solutions for dealing with dander?

A: Investing in an air purifier with a HEPA filter can make a huge difference in reducing airborne dander. Place it in areas where your pet spends the most time.

Q: Are there any treatment options available for pet allergies, other than avoidance?

A: Yes, there are many treatment options for patients with pet allergies. Over-the-counter allergy medications can often relieve less severe symptoms. Stronger symptoms may require allergy shots or allergy drops, which are also very effective in addressing these health issues.

Shedding Season doesn’t have to be miserable. Use these tips for a more manageable, sneeze-free summer.
