Navigating Eczema in the Lone Star State:
Texas Allergist Tips

AllergiesAllergyAsthma

We know living in Texas has plenty of perks: from the vibrant metropolises to the vast landscapes and, of course, the friendly people. But if you’re one of the many Texans dealing with eczema, our state’s unique climate can also pose a challenge.

At Southwest Allergy & Asthma Center, we know your struggles and are here to offer practical tips to help you manage this condition.

Eczema and Its Triggers

Eczema is a chronic skin condition marked by dry, itchy and inflamed skin. It can be triggered by things like environmental conditions, allergens and stress. The fluctuating and often extreme weather in Texas can exacerbate symptoms for many people.

Tip 1: Moisturize

One of the most important steps in managing eczema is keeping your skin well-moisturized. The dry air, especially during the cooler months, can strip your skin of its natural oils. Use a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer at least twice a day to lock in moisture. Try moisturizing after a bath or shower when your skin is still damp.

Tip 2: Understand Your Environment

On hot and humid days, sweat can irritate eczema-prone skin. On the flip side, dry winter air can cause your skin to lose moisture quickly. Use a humidifier in your home during the dry months to maintain indoor humidity levels. In the summer, try to stay cool and wear lightweight fabrics to reduce sweating.

Tip 3: Be Allergen Aware

Pollen, dust mites, pet dander and mold are common allergens that can trigger eczema flare-ups. Keep your living space clean by vacuuming regularly, using allergy-proof covers on mattresses and pillows and reducing clutter where dust can accumulate.

Tip 4: Use Gentle Skincare Products

To avoid irritating your skin, opt for gentle, hypoallergenic products designed for sensitive skin. Avoid using hot water when washing, as it can strip your skin of essential oils. Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free cleansers instead.

Tip 5: Manage Stress

Stress is a well-known trigger for eczema flare-ups. Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your daily routine, such as yoga, meditation or simply taking time out for hobbies you enjoy. Regular exercise can also help manage stress.

Ready for Professional Help?

While these tips can help manage mild eczema, some cases may require professional intervention. If your eczema is not responding to over-the-counter treatments or is affecting your quality of life, it might be time to consult an eczema skin care specialist.
