Tips to Creating an Allergen-Free Zone this Summer

AllergiesAllergyAsthma

Hey there, Dallas! School’s out for summer — it’s HOT —and that means more time spent inside the house. If you’re a chronic allergy sufferer, you’ll understand that the indoors doesn’t always provide relief. Here’s the ultimate list to keeping your home allergen-free this summer.

Keep It Dust & Allergen-Free

1. Clean Regularly: Dust is a major allergen carrier. Make sure to dust surfaces regularly using a damp cloth to trap and remove dust particles. Don’t forget to clean places that often get overlooked, like ceiling fans, window sills and the tops of bookshelves to keep your space allergen-free.

2. Vacuum with a HEPA Filter: Regular vacuuming is essential, but using a vacuum with a HEPA filter makes a big difference. HEPA filters trap tiny particles that regular vacuums might miss. They’re designed to be 99.7% effective in capturing even the smallest microns. Aim to vacuum at least twice a week, especially if you have pets.

3. Declutter: The more stuff you have, the more places allergens have to hide. Declutter your home to make cleaning easier and reduce the places where dust can accumulate.

Control Indoor Air Quality for an Allergen-Free Zone

4. Purchase Air Purifiers: Invest in air purifiers with HEPA filters. Place them in rooms where you spend the most time, like your bedroom and living room. These devices can help remove pollen, dust and other allergens from the air.

5. Keep Windows Closed: While it’s tempting to let in the fresh air in the early morning before it’s too hot, open windows can bring in pollen. You can also consider using an air conditioner filter designed to reduce allergens.

6. Maintain Humidity Levels: Dust mites and mold thrive in humid environments. Use a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels in check, ideally between 30-50%.

Pet Precautions

7. Bathe & Groom Pets Regularly: Pets can carry pollen and other allergens into your home. Regularly bathing and grooming them can help reduce the amount of allergens they bring inside. Keeping them off of furniture and out of bedrooms also helps, but we know this is easier said than done!

8. Wash Pet Bedding: Don’t forget to regularly wash your pet’s bedding in hot water to kill dust mites and remove allergens.

Manage Pollen

9. Create a ‘No-Shoes’ Policy: Shoes can track pollen and other allergens from outside. Leave your shoes at the door or in the garage to keep your home allergen-free.

10. Shower Before Bed: If you’ve been outside, especially during high pollen times, shower and wash your hair before bed to remove pollen. This prevents it from getting onto your bedding.

11. Wash Bedding Frequently: Wash your sheets, pillowcases and blankets in hot water once a week. This helps to remove allergens like dust mites and pollen that can accumulate over time.

Mold Control

12. Check for Leaks Promptly: Mold loves moisture, so fixing any leaks in your home promptly is crucial. Check under sinks, around windows and in the basement for signs of moisture.

13. Ventilate: Make sure your home is well-ventilated, particularly in areas like the bathroom and kitchen. Use exhaust fans to help reduce moisture.

Additional Tips

14. Choose the Right Plants: Some indoor plants can actually help improve air quality by absorbing toxins. Consider adding plants like the spider plant, snake plant or a peace lily to your home.

15. Regular HVAC Maintenance: Have your HVAC system serviced regularly. Changing the filters every few months can significantly improve air quality.

16. Be Mindful of Household Products: Some cleaning products and air fresheners can contain chemicals that trigger allergies. Look for natural, fragrance-free options.

Don’t forget, Southwest Allergy & Asthma Center is here to help. Incorporating allergy shots or drops into your maintenance routine can drastically improve your allergy symptoms.
